Terms and Definitions related to Plumbing in the state of Connecticut
In selecting a plumber it is helpful to know what the state Licensing requirements are and the definition of the terms that apply to plumbing and plumbing contractors. Below we have put together an abbreviated description from the State regulations from the department of Consumer Protection. This is not meant to be any thing other than a reference and not in any means a source of legal information.
State of Connecticut Plumbing Licenses qualifies and limits the scope of work allowed
For licensing requirements the state of Connecticut statute say a "Plumber" means any licensed journey person employed by a plumbing and piping contractor or who is in fact a licensed contractor and is entitled to perform plumbing and piping work.
What a plumber is not
"Plumbing and piping" does not mean or include, and nothing in these regulations shall be held or construed to have any application to, the trade of drilling water wells or the business of selling or delivering plumbing fixtures, appliances, and materials. Nor shall it mean or include swimming pools and related equipment which do not connect directly to any water supply intended for human consumption and/or connect directly or indirectly to any piping which terminates in any area which is subject to receiving sewage and wastes or any other substances which may be dangerous to health.
Definition of a Plumber
"Plumbing Contractor" means any person regularly offering to the general public services of such person or such person's employees in the field of plumbing and piping work
Plumbing and piping work
"Plumbing and piping work" means the installation, repair, replacement, alteration or maintenance of gas, water and associated fixtures, laboratory equipment, sanitary equipment, other than subsurface sewage disposal systems, fire prevention apparatus, all water systems for human usage, sewage treatment facilities and all associated fittings within a building and includes lateral storm and sanitary lines from buildings to the mains, process piping, swimming pools and pumping equipment, and includes making connections to back flow prevention devices, and includes low voltage wiring, not exceeding twenty-four volts, used within a lawn sprinkler system, but does not include (A) solar work, except for the repair of those portions of a solar hot water heating system that include the basic domestic hot water tank and the tie-in to the potable water system, (B) the installation, repair, replacement, alteration or maintenance of fire prevention apparatus within a structure, except for standpipes that are not connected to sprinkler systems, and (C) medical gas and vacuum systems work. For the purposes of this subdivision, "process piping" means piping or tubing that conveys liquid or gas that is used directly in the production of a chemical or a product for human consumption.
